Bauer Blade Curve Chart

Choosing the right blade pattern is one of the most impactful equipment decisions a hockey player can make. The curve you skate with affects how you shoot, handle the puck, and make passes — and no single pattern is right for everyone.

Bauer offers a focused lineup of blade patterns, each engineered for a specific style of play. This guide breaks down every major Bauer curve — with specs, playing style recommendations, and cross-references to equivalent Warrior and CCM patterns.

How to Read a Blade Curve Chart

Every blade pattern is defined by three key characteristics:

Curve location

Where on the blade the curve begins — heel, mid, or toe. Heel curves improve puck pickup and slap shots. Mid curves are versatile and suit most players. Toe curves give extra control on wrist shots and dekes.

Curve depth

How much the blade curves — slight, moderate, or deep. Deeper curves generate more lift and are better for roofing the puck, but make backhands harder. Slight curves improve backhand play and are favored by playmakers and defensive players.

Face angle

Whether the blade face is open, neutral, or closed. An open face naturally lifts the puck and suits wrist and snap shots. A closed or neutral face keeps shots low and is better for hard passes and slap shots.

Bauer Pattern Breakdown

P92 — Mid-Toe, Moderate, Open

The P92 is Bauer's most popular retail pattern and with good reason — it suits a wide range of players and positions. The mid-toe curve with a moderate depth and open face makes it natural for wrist shots and quick releases without being too extreme in any direction. If you're new to Bauer or unsure where to start, the P92 is the default recommendation. Used by Auston Matthews at the pro level.

P28 — Toe, Moderate-Deep, Open

The P28 is designed for players who love to roof the puck. The aggressive toe curve combined with a deep, open face makes lifting shots second nature — snap shots in tight, quick releases off the rush, and backhand lifts all benefit from this pattern. The trade-off is a more challenging backhand for passes and puck retrieval. Best suited to skilled forwards who prioritize shooting over playmaking.

P88 — Mid, Moderate, Neutral/Closed

The P88 is the control-focused option in the Bauer lineup. A mid-curve with a slightly closed or neutral face keeps the puck flat on the blade, improving stickhandling, backhand passes, and low hard shots. Defensemen and two-way forwards tend to gravitate toward this pattern. If your game is built around puck possession and precision passing rather than shooting, the P88 deserves serious consideration.

P90TM — Mid-Toe, Moderate-Deep, Open

The P90TM (Tavares) bridges the gap between the P92 and P28. It takes the versatility of the P92 and adds more curve depth and a slightly more aggressive face angle, giving players better lift on shots without fully committing to the extreme toe curve of the P28. A strong choice for forwards who want the best of both worlds — puck maneuverability in tight spaces and real pop on their shots. Used by John Tavares.

What Pattern Is Right for Me?

The right pattern comes down to your position, playing style, and what you prioritize on the ice.

If you are… Consider Why
An all-around forward or not sure where to start P92 Most versatile pattern in the lineup
A sniper who loves to roof the puck P28 Toe curve and open face maximize lift
A playmaker, defenseman, or two-way forward P88 Neutral face improves backhand and passing
A forward wanting shooting power with puck control P90TM Combines the best of P92 and P28
