Size Guide

Bauer Shin Guards

Find the right size for Youth, Junior, Intermediate and Senior — measure your shin length for the most accurate result.

How to Measure

1
Shin Length

Measure from the centre of your kneecap down to the centre of your outer ankle bone. Measure in cm.

2
Pad length

Shin guard sizes are given in inches and refer to the pad's actual length — not your height.

3
Height

Stand straight and measure from the floor to the top of your head.

4
Fit

The pad should sit just below the knee and the bottom edge should overlap slightly with the skate boot.

Youth

Youth Sizes Ages 3–9

Size Age Weight Height Shin Length
S (8") 3–5 yrs 14–19 kg 91–107 cm 25.5–28 cm
M (9") 5–7 yrs 18–24 kg 104–119 cm 28–31 cm
L (10") 7–9 yrs 23–29 kg 117–135 cm 31–33.5 cm
Tip The inch number refers to the pad's physical length. If between sizes, choose the larger — a pad that is too short leaves the ankle exposed.

Junior

Junior Sizes Ages 8–11

Size Age Weight Height Shin Length
S (11") 8–10 yrs 24–31 kg 127–142 cm 33.5–36 cm
M (12") 10–11 yrs 30–36 kg 140–150 cm 36–38.5 cm
Tip Junior pads offer better performance protection than Youth. Move up when the shin length exceeds 33 cm.

Intermediate

Intermediate Sizes Ages 11–13+

Size Age Weight Height Shin Length
M (13") 11–13 yrs 36–45 kg 147–165 cm 38.5–41 cm
L (14") 13+ yrs 44–68 kg 165–175 cm 41–43.5 cm
Tip Intermediate bridges Junior and Senior — ideal for teen players whose shin length has outgrown Junior sizing.

Senior

Senior Sizes Ages 14+

Size Age Weight Height Shin Length
M (15") 14+ yrs 59–77 kg 170–180 cm 43.5–46 cm
L (16") 15+ yrs 68–86 kg 175–185 cm 46–48.5 cm
XL (17") 15+ yrs 77–95 kg 180–195 cm 48.5–51.5 cm
XXL (18") 15+ yrs 86–104 kg 185–200 cm 51.5+ cm
Note The shin guard should stay firmly in place during skating. If it slides down or blocks the knee, adjust the size or use tape and a hockey sock to secure it.

FAQ

Common Questions

Where exactly do I measure shin length? +

Measure from the centre of the kneecap straight down to the centre of the outer ankle bone. This is the key measurement for selecting the correct shin guard size.

Should I size up or down if between sizes? +

Choose the larger size. A shin guard that is too short leaves the ankle exposed. A slightly oversized pad can be secured with hockey sock and tape.

What does the inch number next to the size mean? +

The inch designation (e.g. 15", 16") refers to the pad's physical length. This is Bauer's standard naming convention and makes it easy to compare pads across different product lines.

How should shin guards fit with skates on? +

The bottom edge of the pad should overlap slightly with the top of the skate boot. The top should sit just below and behind the kneecap without blocking knee flexion.
