The shin guard should cover from just above the ankle up to just below the kneecap. It should not push up against the kneecap and block the knee, and should not leave a gap above the skate boot at the bottom.
Slightly too large is better than too small — a shin guard that is too short leaves the lower shin and ankle exposed. That said, too large reduces control and can slide. Always aim for the correct size based on your shin measurement.
